Data sources

Where the data comes from.

Two federal sources, each used for one thing only. Individual pages carry the specific release and retrieval date behind the figures they show.

American Community Survey — household adoption

Published by the United States Census Bureau. BroadScout imports the table on presence and type of internet subscription, which reports how many households subscribe, how many report no internet access at all, and the margin of error on each.

A five-year release pools five years of responses, so two releases that share years cannot be compared with each other. Any trend shown here will only ever compare releases that do not overlap.

FCC Broadband Data Collection — availability

Providers are required to report to the Federal Communications Commission where they offer service, by technology and advertised speed. BroadScout publishes those filings for the areas it has imported and validated, and states on each page which release the figures come from.

Census Block Assignment Files — place boundaries

Which census blocks belong to which incorporated place, published by the Census Bureau and used here to decide which records a city page may show. It is versioned independently of the data, so a boundary correction is a new version rather than an edit.
