All broadband-serviceable locations, not a household count

These counts describe the state dataset, not just the cities listed below. Providers are counted once across technologies. A provider’s presence somewhere in the state does not establish service at every address.

City coverage is limited to the places imported so far. An absent city is not evidence that service is unavailable.

Every place with reported availability

36 places in Rhode Island have availability reported to the FCC. The largest are named here; the rest are behind their first letter.

What is reported in Rhode Island

Each row counts the locations where at least one provider reports a residential or mixed offering meeting that test, out of the 341,168 broadband-serviceable locations in the source universe. A single location can meet several tests, so these shares overlap and must never be added together. None of this is a guarantee of service at a particular address.

What these technologies mean

Only the technologies reported in Rhode Island are listed. The count is how many providers report each one here, not how many locations it reaches. Each note describes how the technology works; none of it predicts the speed a particular household would get.

Fiber 3 providers
Light carried over an optical line run to the building. Of the technologies reported here it is the one that most often carries upload speeds close to its download speeds.
Cable 5 providers
The shared coaxial cable that also carries cable television. Download speeds are usually much higher than upload speeds on the same connection.
Copper 1 provider
DSL over existing telephone wiring. Speed depends on the distance from the provider's equipment and falls as that distance grows.
Licensed fixed wireless 3 providers
A radio link between an antenna fixed to the building and a nearby tower, on spectrum licensed to the provider. It needs a clear path, so terrain and buildings matter.
NGSO satellite 1 provider
A constellation of satellites in low orbit. They are far closer than geostationary satellites, so the delay added by the trip is much smaller, though service still needs a clear view of the sky.
GSO satellite 2 providers
A satellite in geostationary orbit. The signal travels roughly 70,000 km up and back, which adds a delay noticeable in calls and video conferencing.

Household subscriptions in Rhode Island

Separately from the provider records on this page, the Census Bureau asks households whether they subscribe to internet service. That answers a different question: not who reports they could serve an address, but how many households say they do pay for service. The two are not the same measure and are not combined here.

Household broadband adoption in Rhode Island

How to read these results

Reported locations, not households

A broadband-serviceable location (BSL) is the counting unit in the source data. Counts include locations with residential or mixed residential/business offerings (R/X); they are not household coverage percentages. A location can appear under several providers or technologies, so those counts must not be added together.

An advertised pair, not a speed test

Each speed shown is one explicit download/upload pair from the selected data. We choose the highest explicit download, then upload for ties. It is not a measured speed, a currently purchasable plan, or the highest upload across every record. Tier-coded records do not establish exact Mbps and may conceal higher download values.

Check service at your address

A provider reporting service somewhere in a state or city does not guarantee service at your home. Provider names are FCC filing identities, which may differ from retail brands. Confirm current service, speeds and terms directly with the provider; prices and plans are not verified here.
